Optical

These use an optical isolator circuit formed by a lamp or LED and a photocell. The light source shines more or less depending on the input level. The photoelectric cell reads the varying brightness of the light source and changes gain accordingly. Optical compressor response time is slower than other types, with a smooth attack that can be almost unnoticeable. A good example of this type of compressor is the “Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor“.

VCA

Probably the most common type of compressor is the VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier). These are super versatile. A VCA compressor uses an integrated circuit (IC) to give precise control over gain reduction. These generally don’t “color” the sound much, and have very little distortion making them one of the most popular types of compressors on the market. Example: Vertigo VSC-2 Quad Discrete.

FET

These use transistors to vary the gain. FET compressors use transistors to more reliably emulate tubes. They tend to have a unique, fast, clean sound. There aren’t really that many of them, due to the extra circuit required. Example: Universal Audio 1176.

Valve

Most tube compressors are based on one of the circuits above, with one or two tubes in the signal path, for a warmer sound, or colorful as we call it. Example: Manley – STEREO VARIABLE MU

Multi-Band

A multiband compressor is exactly what it sounds like, a compressor that works differently in different frequency ranges. This allows more or less compression to be done on the low frequencies than on the highs or vice versa. The advantage is that the Atack, Release and Ratio for example can be adjusted completely differently, reducing or increasing the amount of compression in each frequency range. They work by splitting the input across multiple filters. Each signal is then passed through its own compressor then recombined (mixed) at the end. In this case, we have at least 2 compressors working at the same time. These, mostly found in DAWs in the form of plug-ins, are uncommon in Hardware, the famous analog world. Example: TUBE-TECH SMC 2B

1. Multi-Band Compressors:

• Multi-Band compressors divide the audio signal into multiple frequency bands, allowing independent compression of each band. This enables different compression settings for lows, mids, and highs, enhancing control over dynamic range across the spectrum. Example: TUBE-TECH SMC 2B.

A: Each type of compressor operates differently based on its circuitry and components:

Brazilian DJ and Producer Thiago Manhani Upgrades His PMC Monitors

After completing many successful projects on a pair of PMC DB1S-AII monitors, Thiago Manhani has upgraded his SM Mastering facility in Brazil by investing in a pair of PMC twotwo.6 loudspeakers.

Mixing and mastering engineer Manhani, who also DJs under the name of Olaroch, set up SM Mastering in São Paulo in 2015 and now attracts a varied and international clientele.

“We aim to deliver the ultimate in sound quality by adopting the most advanced techniques in production, mixing and mastering,” Manhani says. “In recent months we have been making big changes to the studio by installing new equipment for music production, including the new PMC twotwo.6 monitors. We rely on our PMCs to make sure every project is in perfect harmony and sounds really good.”

PMC’s proprietary Advances Transmission Line (ATL) bass loading technology is renowned for ensuring that the company’s products deliver a detailed, natural sound that is rich and full at any volume level, This, says Manhani, is what gives him confidence when he uses PMC monitors.

“ATL Technology is really innovative – you can feel all the frequencies in a unique, sweet and very powerful way,” he says. “The stereo field is something that I fall in love with every day. I actually ask myself, how is this possible?  I was more than happy with my old PMC monitors – and we are still using them in the studio – but our twotwo.6 monitors are even better and I am delighted with them.”

GSB ProAudio in Brazil supplied SM Mastering’s new monitors and Manhani says his long standing relationship with the company was very reassuring when it came to making this investment.

“GSB ProAudio gave me all the support and information I needed for this purchase to be a success,” he says. “As soon as I took the monitors out of the box, I couldn’t have been happier. With PMC you realise there is much more to the product than just an audio monitor – you are also buying into a fantastic story where there is great respect for every detail.”

He adds that what he likes best about PMC monitors is their modernity and their ability to deliver different set up options. “The finish is excellent, too – everything is so well built that I spend hours looking at them and feeling safe and happy. Just seeing the PMC logo makes me realise that I am on the right track.”

SM Mastering’s collaborations include acclaimed artists and DJs such as David Guetta, Tiesto, Armin van Buuren and Solomun. Manhani is also focusing on his Olaroch solo project with a number of new tracks in the pipeline.

“If I could go back to the past, I would have certainly spent many more years working on PMC monitors,” he says. “Their products represent confidence, stability, freedom, creativity, emotion and truth, which are the only correct ways to express yourself through music.”
